Labor of Love Awardee
Monyee Chau | Seattle, WA
Monyee is an organizer and community member in Seattle’s Chinatown International District (CID). They are queer, nonbinary, and a descendent of immigrants. They are committed to preserving the histories and legacies of Chinatowns globally. They currently organize with the CID coalition, and Anakbayan Seattle, and PARISOL (Pacific Rim Solidarity Network), each of which is focused on alternatives to police, national democracy, and addressing anti-Blackness.
Monyee is currently working to support and empower Chinatowns throughout the resurgence of Yellow Peril due to COVID-19, and exploring how the Asian community can break down anti-Black stigma within the model minority fallacy in order to be in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. They use art, a universal tool, to emphasize that conversations must be had for the sake of healing and progress.
