Resolution to Support the Save Public Health Campaign

WHEREAS, King County Government intends to address its General Fund budget deficit by laying off Union workers in the Department of Public Health and closing more than half of Seattle King County Public Health Clinics (SKCPH); and 

WHEREAS, Public Health serves as the foundation for healthy communities and is vital for the well-being of society, addressing a wide range of health concerns that affect everyone regardless of socio-economic status; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 65 percent of SKCPH clients are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), who are disproportionately affected by health disparities and systemic inequities in access to healthcare services; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 40 percent of SKCPH clients speak a language other than English, reflecting the diverse linguistic needs of our community that require culturally and linguistically appropriate services to ensure effective communication care; and

WHEREAS, Nearly 20 percent of SKCPH clients are currently experiencing homelessness, highlighting the critical role of Public Health in providing accessible healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations who are often marginalized and face barriers to accessing standard healthcare facilities; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 25 percent of SKCPH clients are uninsured, underscoring the importance of Public Health services in offering care to individuals who might otherwise go without necessary medical attention due to the lack of health insurance; and

WHEREAS, Our Public Health Centers are strategically located across King County, including in Auburn, Seattle, Des Moines, Bellevue, Federal Way, Kent, Burien, Lake City, Renton, and Kirkland, and other satellite locations co-located with partners, closing these centers would result in health care deserts for many families; and

WHEREAS, The Save Public Health Campaign is dedicated to ensuring the continued operation and expansion of these vital services, advocating for the resources necessary to maintain and enhance the health and well-being of all King County residents, especially those most in need;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the MLK Labor hereby expresses its strong support for the Save Public Health Campaign in the form of recruiting MLK labor affiliates and community partners to actively support the campaign through advocacy, volunteerism, attending events and actions, or any other efforts organized by the campaign; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that MLK Labor will write letters expressing the MLK Labor Council and affiliates’ broad support for continuing direct public health services to our communities within King County.  These letters will go to the King County Executive and Council; the City of Seattle Mayor and Council, and State and Federal Representatives within King County. 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that this resolution be communicated to elected officials, community leaders, partner organizations, and the public, to galvanize support and raise awareness for the Save Public Health Campaign, recognizing the essential role of Public Health in building a healthier, more equitable society for all.
