Tori Nakamatsu-Figaroa Selected to Represent Labor on Social Housing Board
April 25, 2023
MLK Labor appointed Metropolitan Market worker, Tori Nakamatsu–Figaroa, to represent labor on the Social Housing Public Development Authority Board.
MLK Labor has appointed Tori Nakamatsu-Figaroa (she/her) to represent the labor community on Seattle’s newly-formed Social Housing Public Development Authority Board. Tori is a UFCW Local 3000 shop steward and has worked at Metropolitan Market for the past six years.
The Social Housing Board was developed as a result of Initiative 135 which passed in February. The board will consist of 13 members, with at least one consisting of a rank-and-file union member selected by MLK Labor.
Tori led UFCW 3000’s member advocacy on I-135 as part of the Movement Builder program. Tori is originally from Hawaii and has experienced the challenges of not being able to afford to live in their home community. She is inspired by the work of House Our Neighbors and labor working together to address the root causes of our current housing crisis, advocating for policy that both creates affordable housing and enables people access to the necessary resources to stay in their homes. She and other UFCW 3000 members played a decisive role in the outcome of this election, having collected signatures in grocery stores across Seattle and canvassing voters door to door.
